Etón American Red Cross ARCFR600R Digital Radio Review July 26, 2009 G. Teruya (Honolulu, HI) 49 out of 52 found this review helpful
This is a review of the Etón American Red Cross ARCFR600R Solarlink Digital AM/FM/SW/NOAA S.A.M.E. Weather Radio with Flashlight, Siren, Solar and Cell Phone Charger in Red.
My interest is usually in survival products, particularly in coolers and flashlights. In this case, I was looking for a emergency weather radio that had a NOAA feature and could be powered through various means. This product appeared to meet everything I could ask for in an emergency radio.
I actually just received the product yesterday and spent the entire evening trying out every feature at least two to three times. I did not bother reading the manual as I wanted to see how intuitive this radio is and if I could figure out how to use the features easily. Like a previous review noted, once you figure it out, it is easy to set up presets, time, and date. The display lights up with a bright, even, white backlit display. The only complaint I would have is about the backlight not staying on very long. But I understand that this helps conserve battery power.
From the appearance, this radio appears to be sturdy, having a rubberized covering that appears to be sealed well. The radio has some heft as well, and you can see deep-set screws along the body, that holds the radio together snug. The rest of the radio is made of plastic, including the knobs of the dials, which in my opinion is not a bad thing. The antenna fits in snug, which provides protection should the radio suffer from a fall. Even the solar panel is set in a little, which will protect the panel if the radio should drop. Bottom line is that Eton has taken measures to create a sturdy and practical design for this radio. I did not test this radio for water resistance due to the pricey $80 cost.
The date, clock, and digital tuner including the AM/FM, NOAA, and Short Wave features worked really well. I did not have to use the antenna much. The speaker works well and can handle the volume when it is pumped up, though the quality of sound including treble and bass is not that of my Sony ICF36 Portable Radio, which I rate as the top of speaker output for portable radios. I am not knowledgeable on S.A.M.E. system and did not know how to use that function. The siren, flashlight, and signal beacon worked fine. The solar power, crank, rechargeable battery, and regular batteries worked fine to power the radio. The radio does not come up with cell phone connections, so I was not able to test out the cell phone charger or hook up the radio to a USB port.
Overall, the Etón American Red Cross ARCFR600R Digital Radio is a comprehensive package of features for disaster/emergency situations. All of the features that I was able to test worked well. The radio has a well thought out, sturdy design. I rate this radio a 4.5 out of 5.0 score. The score could be higher if the flashlight had a brighter and efficient CREE LED and speaker could put out a little better bass sound.
Nicely made radio a quality product. June 17, 2009 G. Jorgenson 13 out of 14 found this review helpful
Every thing worked as advertised. I was realy impressed by the radioes tuner. it took a couple of hours to familiarize with all the controls & menues. Once you do that every thing comes in to its place. Lots of pwr & a good buy.
GREAT RADIO! NEED ACCESSORIES? October 12, 2009 Carol Lincoln (ALASKA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I love this radio! I recently upgraded from an FR300 and I love the improvements. I use it everyday and when I go anywhere.
Amazon does not have the AC adapter that is designed for this radio so I ordered the proper one from Eton that works on the FR500 and FR600 (I called them to verify) [...]
Eton also has the following antenna:
Eton AN200 Grundig Antenna Loop helps clarify AM radio reception.
First, plug it in to the "Antenna Input" jack. Then tune to the AM radio frequency of your choice. Fine-tune the radio frequency by adjusting the control knob on the AN200.
No Antenna Input jack? No problem! Simply set the antenna loop close to your radio for better reception.
AN200 is an all direction receiver. You can get better reception by placing it at different directions.
Features:
Antenna loop
Better AM reception and sound
Works with and without Antenna Input jack
All direction receiver - place in different directions to get a better signal

Many features, good functionality July 17, 2010 ADK Explorer Finally a multi-powered radio with an Aux input!! This was one of my top criteria when searching for a new multi-powered radio. I've seen and owned a few different models and brands of multi-powered radios, and Eton makes the best by far. Honestly, I'm not sure why this one gets bad reviews. The reception is incredible- it even outdoes my car. Even the shortwave seems to perform very well, and the scan feature makes SW much more enjoyable. Regarding battery life- I conditioned the battery by plugging into the USB on my computer and gave it a full charge as soon as I got it. Put it near a window and it will always be charged when you need it. I will probably bring some AA batteries with me for my upcoming canoe trip just in case it rains the whole time and I get lazy and don't want to crank the dynamo. The sound on this radio is not superb, but very listenable. I cannot attest to durability until I take it for it's first expedition. It is sure to see plenty of abuse. I will update my review later. I can say that it feels like it will hold up well.
Everything works but manual is a bit sketchy July 6, 2009 Wafin (Goleta, CA) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
Listening to the radio now at work and it's perfect.
As mentioned, the manual is a bit sketchy at explaining certain things. For example, I've had it charging via the usb all night and a few hours at work and the red led light is still on. Does this go away when the battery is fully charged? Don't know, since the manual doesn't say.
Also, when you turn the smaller top nob to "Off-Phone charger" I was seeing a low battery message on the screen. I figured this out to be the fact that when in the "off" position it using the solar panel or the crank to be able to charge the phone. So it won't charge the phone via the rechargeable battery inside the unit. Bummer. :)
When on "Solar" you'll get the low battery if you aren't under a bright sun. Couldn't get it to charge during the hour before sunset so had to go to "Dynamo" setting to listen to radio.
Wish the nobs had a bit more click to them but you get used to them quickly.
There are a lot of settings and submenus that the manual doesn't talk you through. Like all the various national weather tests. Also, how will I know if I'm getting an emergency message? Can I only get this while on the "alert" settings, or will can I be listening to the radio on the "FM" selection and receive the alerts.
Only time will tell about the warnings. I'm hoping not to have to receive one, but be nice to test it out. Guess I'll have to turn on one of the test as mentioned above to see if I get anything.
Other then that, I do think it is a great radio. Wish it was waterproof and that you could charge a cell phone without sun or cranking the radio but I'm human and can adapt to my environment. :)
Hope this helps.
