I found the perfect one! November 28, 2009 Mountaingirl (Sierra Nevada, CA USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I have been looking for "the perfect" clock radio for quite a while and I think I found it!
A marvel of engineering and design -- it's light, airy, amazing looking yet sturdy and substantial at the same time. This is so well designed! I find that the buttons are in the right places, easy to get to and intuitive, they feel very substantial and not flimsy and cheap like so many other electronics today. I don't know how they were able to make a piece that is so substantial and solid feeling yet airy and light and unobtrusive looking. A really great job done though! I am quite impressed and very pleasantly surprised, this feels like a product that will last, which sometimes seems like a thing of teh past- toay everything is made to toss...
I love the non digital radio station dial-- I live in a mountainous area where it's very hard to get any reception, and the manual tuner is a must. And this one is well made and sensitive -- I actually get several stations with this, which I have never been able to get with others I have tried.
On top of it the light display is brilliantly done! The mirror finish is really cool it's a smoky color so not like a shiny standard mirror. And the time is displayed in a golden color that makes it really easy at a quick glance see what time it is whether it's light or dark in the room, yet at night it's very unobtrusive. Living in the mountains we have no ambient light (except the moon when it's full) coming into the bedroom. So, any light source really pops out and I have a hard time sleeping with that in the room. So I have been looking for one that didn't keep me awake. I have tried several ones with adjustable displays but ended up having to toss a piece of clothing over each one I have tried, which makes it a useless time keeper. This one was just perfect.
I really, really like this clock radio and can highly recommend it.
Looks good, does the basics November 5, 2009 P. MSakamoto (Saratoga, California USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is your basic bedside alarm clock updated in appearance and some function for the 2000's.
Pros:
*Looks really nice with the mirrored front and large numbers.
*the large numbers are easily readable from across a normal bedroom.
*It has a straight power cord to the wall instead of a power brick so it doesn't block off other outlets.
*My 13 year old daughter was able to make it work without help.
Cons:
*The time adjust could use a fast reverse as well as fast forward.
*The radio uses a tiny analog dial to tune with on the side of the unit. If you are in an area that has a lot of radio stations close together, this will be frustrating because you will have trouble separating adjacent stations.
Overall, decent value for the money. I have an iHome clock radio, too, which has a lot more functions and sounds better, but costs three times more and takes up more space. This is a great choice as the alarm clock for the guest room or for your kids.
Awesome Product, You Won't Regret Purchasing It!! October 29, 2009 Swati S. Desai (Washington, DC) My normal alarm clock is a Sony ICFCD3iP CD Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone (Silver), also purchased from Amazon.
It is a good alarm clock, but it is very expensive (it's gone up in price since I bought it). See my review on it for more information.
First things first, the Phillips alarm clock does NOT work with my iPhone 2G.
I have not tried it with any other mp3 player, I will update my review when I have.
As this clock is not specifically for Apple products, those customers with non-Apple mp3 players will like this clock.
Those with Apple products might be better off with an iHome (which I kind of wish I'd gotten, instead of my Sony).
The Phillips alarm clock has two separate alarms.
You can listen to a buzzer or the radio, but not your mp3 player to wake up.
The buzzer is very quiet. For those of you who do not like loud blaring alarm clocks, this might work for you.
I found it a tad quiet.
The brightness of the display can be adjusted - to high or low. I like the yellow/orange display of this alarm clock - it is less disturbing than the cool blue of my Sony.
The radio is VERY VERY old school. It is NOT digital. It has a wheel, you turn it to tune to your radio station. This really really really sucks. A lot. The radio stations do not come in clearly, there is a lot of static. So be prepared to spend some time fine tuning the reception.
If you listen to just one radio station, and are prepared to tune your radio to it and keep it there, then this might work for you.
The quality of this alarm clock is quite low. Cheap Chinese plastic parts, a general rickety feel. (My Sony, which is four times the price of this alarm clock, has the same problem). (My "el cheapo" travel alarm clock from Walmart, while also a cheap Chinese import, has a more sturdy feel).
But it looks good, because of the neat mirror (which is warped, so don't try fixing your makeup on it or checking your hair on it).
I would say it's a very good "guest room" alarm clock.
I would not recommend it as your own personal alarm clock.
If you are on a budget, Walmart and Target have a number of "travel" alarm clocks for less than $10 -- those would be better alarm clocks than this one.
Altogether, this product doesn't cost a lot, so Phillips is probably thinking they can swoop in and pick up the middle of the market - those who want to upgrade their el cheapo Walmart or Target alarm clocks, but still can't afford to shell out $100 on an alarm clock.
My suggestion: hold on to el cheapo! If you really want a nice alarm clock, save your money and get an iHome or that one from Sharper Image (both cost about $100). (No, I would not recommend purchasing the Sony alarm clock that I did).
This alarm clock, while nice, is in my opinion a big waste of money.
If you are looking for something "nice looking" to impress guests who come over for Thanksgiving or Christmas to stay in your guest room, this clock might be a winner.
I think Phillips can easily charge $50 for this, and still have it "look good for the money".
(Remember, though, while it looks good, the actual quality is quite low, and the radio tuner (which is probably how Phillips cut down on the cost of making this alarm clock) is a pain).
I'm giving the alarm clock three stars because it doesn't totally suck.
EDIT: December 11, 2009
Increased clock rating to 5 starts.
I've lived with this clock for a while now.
It's a great clock! I gave away my Sony and am using this instead (and my sony was four times the price of this alarm clock!).
I was initially very upset that the Phillips clock did not work with my iPhone. But it doesn't claim to. It does worth with a normal iPod, though.
The two separate alarms are still great.
The manual tuning wheel for the radio is still annoying.
The buzzer is not that quiet after all. If you ignore it, it becomes louder. So, it's great after all.
The brightness of the display is *perfect*. I can read the time and it doesn't have so much light that my room is bathed in light. The color is great, I like the yellow much better than the blue my Sony was.
The construction of this product is good. I shouldn't have downgraded it for being bendy plastic; most items for sale nowadays are.
And it's a terrific looking little clock!
Great design, do purchase it. I would recommend it highly.
Stylish November 19, 2009 G. Ruiz The style of this clock is really nice. The quality of the sound is ok, and although it's easy to use, sometimes it's not that easy to deactivate the alarm. The snooze button is reachable, but the on/off button for the alarm is not. I struggle sometimes in the morning to turn it off. I would still recommend it since it's stylish and it has pretty good functions like a second alarm, an audio jack for you mp3, and a quality FM radio.
Smart Looking Clock Radio January 21, 2010 A. Brent (Torrance, CA) Gave this Item as a gift to parents. They both like the look of this alarm clock radio. This is probably the best for the money and easy to use.
